U.S. retailers have increasingly relied on last-mile delivery partnerships to improve their fulfillment networks in 2025.
Already among North American leaders in the Top 2000, many retailers have capitalized on their physical stores as key fulfillment assets. Specifically, more of the leading online retailers with physical stores have begun using Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats for last-mile delivery. The Top 2000 refers to the largest online retailers in the region based on their annual ecommerce sales and more.
In many cases, individual retailers simply made their stores shoppable through at least one of those last-mile delivery providers’ apps and websites. However, the last-mile delivery companies have also released ecommerce technology offerings of their own.
Meanwhile, some retailers, including Kroger, have partnered with all three. Amid Kroger’s shifting partnership with Ocado Group for the latter’s warehouse technology and fulfillment offerings, the retailer announced expanding relationships with Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats.
Kroger said its “hybrid ecommerce offerings” will accelerate its online sales growth. It will use its growing number of stores and its established third-party delivery partners, as well as automated fulfillment facilities. Furthermore, Kroger has agreed to a one-time, $350 million cash payment to Ocado Group as the retailer makes changes to its fulfillment network that impact the U.K.-based technology company.

DoorDash and Instacart each also released apps for OpenAI’s ChatGPT in mid-December.
Instacart launched its ChatGPT app first. That made it the first grocery partner — and the first app overall — to support end-to-end shopping with Instant Checkout inside OpenAI’s ChatGPT, according to dual announcements from the companies. Through Instacart’s ChatGPT app, consumers can build grocery carts and complete checkout directly inside a chat. Instacart’s delivery network then fulfills the orders.
At launch, DoorDash said its new app in ChatGPT let users discover recipes, turn ingredients into shoppable grocery lists and complete purchases through DoorDash’s own app for delivery. Participating retailers include grocery giants such as Kroger and Safeway, along with regional chains including Wegmans, Bi-Rite, Schnucks and Fairway Markets.
