Boone is expected to take over as CEO at Michaels on Feb. 28. He will replace Ashley Buchanan, who became CEO at Kohl’s in January after Michaels announced his departure on Nov. 24.
“I am honored to join Michaels, an iconic retailer and the leading creative destination for millions of customers across North America,” Boone said. “I am excited about the tremendous opportunity to continue to build on the momentum to drive long-term growth and deliver a best-in-class customer experience.”
Boone focused on digital transformation during his time at Staples Canada. There, he addressed the company’s retail experience, expanded its merchandise range and scaled its services and B2B businesses. He did so by prioritizing acquisitions and strategic partnerships, Michaels noted in its press release.
In addition, Boone worked for 16 years at Canadian retailer Loblaw Companies, leading Loblaw’s National Wholesale Club division. Loblaw ranks No. 32 in the Top 2000.

Michaels made noteworthy pushes into online sales in 2024. Among those efforts, the retailer upgraded its online marketplace and Etsy competitor MakerPlace. The company also expanded its delivery options, which grew to include Uber Easts, DoorDash and Instacart as partners.
The Michaels Companies currently lists its North American scope as encompassing 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada. It also sells online through Michaels.com and Michaels.ca and operates the custom framing service Artistree, as well as MakerPlace.
