Google has partnered with payment companies Affirm and Klarna to make buy now, pay later (BNPL) offerings available through the AI Mode, where consumers can have artificial intelligence (AI) agents make purchases on their behalf — a process called agentic commerce.
Affirm and Klarna are rolling out their payment options in traditional Google Search as well as AI Mode and the Gemini app. Specifically, users will be able to use Affirm or Klarna when checking out with Google Pay.
“As AI becomes a more active part of how people discover and buy, it’s critical that the payment options remain secure and reliable,” said Ashish Gupta, vice president and general manager of merchant shopping at Google, in an announcement.
Gupta said Google’s work with Affirm and Klarna gives consumers “more flexibility.” Google announced both partnerships simultaneously on May 12.
Both Affirm and Klarna built their integrations to comply with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Google and Shopify co-developed the UCP as an open standard for agentic commerce that determines how agentic AI and ecommerce platforms can interact.
In 2025, 24 retailers in the Top 2000 Database used Affirm as a vendor for payment processing. However, 273 retailers in the Top 2000 accepted Affirm payments and 203 accepted Klarna. The Top 2000 Database tracks North America’s largest online retailers by their global annual ecommerce sales and more.
Who Google is partnering with on BNPL in agentic commerce checkout
At checkout, users will see Affirm and Klarna as options within Google Pay.
When consumers select Affirm, they’ll go through a “real-time eligibility check,” according to Affirm. And if approved, they can choose a plan that works best for them, Affirm said.
Consumers will see the full cost, payment schedule and end date before committing, according to Affirm. It also said consumers “will never owe a penny in late or hidden fees.”
If consumers select Klarna at checkout, they will have access to payment options, including the company’s option to pay in four interest-free installments and longer-term financing for larger purchases. Klarna said it underwrites each with an affordability check.
David Sykes, chief commercial officer at Klarna, said in a statement that its partnership with Google gives consumers more control over how they pay.
“As shopping moves into conversational and AI-driven environments, flexible payments become essential infrastructure for how people buy,” Sykes said.
Vishal Kapoor, senior vice president of product at Affirm, said as AI tools make more decisions for humans, products relying on “hidden terms or ambiguity won’t hold up.”
“People deserve transparent, flexible financial options,” Kapoor said in a statement. “Agentic commerce may be the moment that makes that impossible to ignore.”
Affirm said its experience with Google will roll out “in the coming weeks.” Consumers will have “more ways to use Affirm across the Google ecosystem, from wallets and browsers to AI-powered shopping journeys,” according to the Affirm announcement.
