Barnes & Noble Booksellers Inc. added a Staples Inc. veteran to help oversee its e-commerce operations.

Barnes & Noble, No. 54 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide, has hired Demos Parneros as its new chief operating officer, replacing Jaime Carey, who was promoted to president of its development and restaurant group in June.

Parneros will have a hand in overseeing e-commerce, merchandising and other aspects of the business. According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, he’ll receive a base salary of $900,000 and a $600,000 signing bonus.

Parneros worked 30 years at Staples (No. 5), most recently as president of North American stores and online before resigning in January.

Parneros isn’t the only change Barnes & Noble has made to the C-suite this year. The bookseller in August fired CEO Ron Boire after less than a year on the job. The retailer didn’t offer details about Boire’s departure at the time, saying only “Mr. Boire was not a good fit for the organization and that it was in the best interests of all parties for him to leave the company.”  Company founder Len Riggio subsequently took over the CEO role.
