Darby Smart, an e-retailer of do-it-yourself craft kits that launched in 2013, recruits designers through the web to come up with craft kit ideas and its customer community, if it likes the idea, votes them into production.

Darby Smart began selling do-it-yourself craft kits online in 2013, and sales are increasing quickly, up 81% on a quarter over quarter basis from Q2 to Q3 this year, says Nicole Shariat Farb, co-founder and CEO. Designers submit craft project ideas, and Darby Smart sells kits with the instructions and supplies needed to make them. Crafters can share photos of their finished projects on the site and follow designers they like to make sure they see those designers’ next creations. The designers get a cut of sales. A subscription option, added by customer request, sends subscribers a mystery DIY box every month. Subscriptions now account for 30% of Darby Smart’s volume. “That’s the joy of e-commerce,” Farb says. “You have so much flexibility to empower consumers to shop the way they want.”
