A new CEO is scheduled to take over leadership duties at Ahold Delhaize USA.
The supervisory board for Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize named Claire Peters its next CEO. She is a former leader at Amazon and would assume the role on Sept. 8.
There, she will have oversight of the company’s U.S. portfolio. Those banners include brands such as Food Lion, Giant Food, The Giant Company, Hannaford and Stop & Shop.
Who is the new CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA?
Ahold Delhaize touted Peters’ experience as vice president for Worldwide Fresh at Amazon. In addition, she has held previous executive positions at Woolworths Group and Tesco. Altogether, she will bring three decades of experience in retail, food, wholesale and ecommerce to Ahold Delhaize’s grocery and retail portfolio.
“I am honored to be nominated to join Ahold Delhaize and lead its great local brands in the US,” Peters stated in a post on LinkedIn. “I look forward to working with the teams across Ahold Delhaize USA to build on the strength of the local brands and continue serving customers, associates and communities with excellence.”
In addition to grocery and retail, her experience also encompasses advisory roles. Those have included capacities at the venture capital firm EndCAP and Boston Consulting Group.
“Claire brings strong operational leadership and deep experience in omnichannel grocery and business transformation,” said Frans Muller, president and CEO at Ahold Delhaize. “She has led businesses of significant scale across several markets, with full accountability for performance, customer proposition and execution.”
Omnichannel options are important tools for grocers looking to improve conversion rates and compete against giants such as Amazon and Walmart.
“Her combination of strategic insight, customer focus and people-first leadership makes her very well positioned to lead Ahold Delhaize USA into its next chapter,” Muller said. “I look forward to welcoming Claire to the team and working closely with her as we continue to build on the exceptional leadership strength of our brands in the U.S.”
Approval by Ahold Delhaize shareholders
Ahold Delhaize shareholders will weigh in on Peters’ appointment during a meeting. It has not yet announced the date for that meeting. Also, the meeting will address the nomination of new board nominee Edmond Mesrobian. He is a former chief technology officer at Nordstrom and Tesco and Expedia Group.
“We are pleased to nominate Claire as CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA and member of the Management Board,” said Wiebe Draijer, chair of the supervisory board of Ahold Delhaize. Draijer called Peters “a highly accomplished retail leader with deep operational and digital expertise.” Moreover, he said she has “broad experience across grocery and consumer businesses, and a strong record of delivering results in complex environments.”
Her arrival would follow the exit of JJ Fleeman as Ahold Delhaize USA’s CEO. The company announced his departure in March.
