The Home Depot is adding more artificial intelligence to its suite of digital tools for professional contractors with the launch of a feature called Material List Builder AI.
It designed the AI to cut hours from the process of building project material lists. The new capability falls within its Project Planning platform that enables remodelers, renovators, builders and specialty tradespeople to generate detailed, job-specific material lists in minutes using natural language, voice input or existing documents.
Creating accurate product lists has long been a manual and time-consuming task for contractors, often requiring searches across multiple systems, price comparisons, and repeated re-entry of information into spreadsheets or project management software. The process is also prone to errors and omissions that can delay projects and increase costs. Home Depot designed the Material List Builder AI to streamline that workflow.
“Pros often tell us that their most valuable resource for any job is time, so we’re focused on delivering solutions that empower Pros to work smarter and faster,” said Mike Rowe, executive vice president of Pro for The Home Depot. “Material List Builder AI generates reliable, comprehensive job lists in a fraction of the time it would take to complete this process manually.”
The Home Depot Inc. ranks No. 4 in the Top 2000 Database. The Digital Commerce 360 database ranks North America’s largest online retailers by their annual ecommerce sales and more. Home Depot is also the top-ranked online retailer in the Top 2000’s Hardware & Home Improvement category.
How the Home Depot Material List Builder AI works
Contractors can describe a project in plain language and the system interprets the request to produce a grouped list of required materials. The plain language can include outlining the scope of a bathroom remodel and specifying tile types, fixtures and lighting. Users can also dictate project details on a jobsite, paste in an existing list from documents or messages, or begin with templates for common projects such as kitchens, bathrooms and decks.
The tool organizes the draft list by project phase and allows users to edit before finalizing. Once accepted, product recommendations appear beneath each section, reflecting the contractor’s preferred pricing and current inventory availability. Materials can then be ordered directly through Home Depot. It then saves the lists for reuse on similar jobs.
The feature is available at no cost to members of Pro Xtra, Home Depot’s loyalty and benefits program for professionals, and is integrated into the company’s broader Project Planning digital platform.
The launch underscores Home Depot’s continued investment in technology, logistics and services aimed at professional customers. They account for a significant share of the company’s sales and typically make larger, repeat purchases tied to renovation and construction projects.
In addition to the AI tool, Home Depot promotes services such as trade credit financing, same-day and scheduled delivery, two-hour pickup, dedicated account management and preferred pricing on frequently purchased materials. By embedding AI into project planning and purchasing workflows, the retailer is seeking to reduce friction for contractors while encouraging them to source more of their materials through a single supplier.
