To support the technology demands of its recently expanded network, Do It Best has appointed Ken Widner as vice president of information technology and chief information officer.

Do It Best has announced significant developments in its business operations this year — and now it’s bringing in a new chief information officer (CIO).

In October, the company entered into an agreement to acquire all operations of True Value Co., a Chicago-based hardlines wholesaler with more than 4,500 independently owned retail stores under the True Value brand. This acquisition will expand Do It Best’s network to over 8,000 locations across the United States and more than 50 countries.

The acquisition is part of Do It Best’s broader strategy to enhance its multichannel business. According to CEO Dan Starr, the company is also prioritizing investments in technology and operations to support its members and improve customer experience. Recent advancements include artificial intelligence (AI)-driven ecommerce tools such as enhanced search functionality and personalized shopping experiences. They have contributed to increased customer engagement and sales. Website upgrades — including a rental module, instant rebates, and the integration of the Best Rewards program — further highlight the company’s commitment to personalization.

New CIO at Do It Best

To support the technology demands of the expanded network, Do It Best has appointed Ken Widner as vice president of information technology and CIO.

Widner brings experience from his tenure at Casey’s General Stores. He will focus on streamlining operations, supporting member stores, and driving innovation in ecommerce and IT systems. He succeeds John Mergy, who will retire in January 2025.

Do It Best is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It operates an ecommerce site for its members at doitbest.com. It also ranks No. 419 on Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Database of the largest North American online retailers.

True Value, founded in 1932, operates 13 regional distribution centers and employs approximately 2,500 associates. Its website, TrueValue.com, connects customers to the ecommerce platforms of its member stores, providing a localized online shopping experience.

With these strategic moves, Do It Best aims to position itself as a leader in the home improvement retail sector while providing enhanced tools and resources for its member stores worldwide.
