Health insurer Cigna Corp. has introduced a new app for managing health and wellness.

The new app for Google and Apple devices features a dashboard for tracking data collected by wearable devices, an extensive health library containing articles and recipes, general health assessments content and personality assessment tools to create personalized programs for each user, Cigna says.

“We know that our customers are hungry for ways they can better manage their health and wellbeing,” says Cigna Global Health Benefits chief medical officer Dr. Jose Quesada. “We developed this app to marry what we know our customers are looking for with the tools that we know patients need to improve their health.”

The new app, Cigna calls its “Well Being” app integrates with various wearable devices so users can track their body mass index, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep metrics and related data. The app also lets users conduct a telehealth visit and connect with employee assistance specialists. ”

The “Well Being” app is Cigna’s first new mobile health product since last fall. In October, Cigna upgraded its MyCigna Apple and Android app with biometric security that lets the user access the app using their fingerprint instead of a log-in identification and password. About 2 million people have downloaded the MyCigna app and about 350,000 plan members use the app on a consistent basis, the company says.

Of those 350,000 active MyCigna app users about 50%, or 175,000 plan members, now use the fingerprint technology to access the app and manage their health benefits online. The biometric security called Knock Lock employs a fingerprint technology originally deployed for mobile devices from LG Electronics that lets consumers scan their fingerprint on the display screen of their device to gain access.

Cigna updated its app both to enhance security and to make it easier for Cigna plan members to access their benefits information and web site features, says Cigna digital services mobile channel manager Radhika Alla.
