One of New Yorks biggest health systems is making its mobile app available to many more consumers.

Mount Sinai Health System, which incorporates seven hospitals, more than 7,000 primary and specialty care physicians and 12 ambulatory surgical centers, has launched an Android version of its MtSinaiNY app, which gives users access to a variety of self-service digital healthcare tools.

Like the Apple version launched in June, the Android app lets patients book appointments, pay bills and access their medical records. It also provides general information about Mount Sinai facilities and live blog and social media updates. Future updates to the app will include telemedicine, wayfinding, and enhanced access to Mount Sinai services, although the health system didnt release details.

More specific tools let paitents find a doctor by name, specialty, and insurance carrier, or by location and securely access medical records to review test results, check appointments and prescriptions and communicate with doctors.

Patients visiting Mount Sinai want access to familiar technology that simplifies their experience, says Mount Sinai chief medical information officer Dr. Bruce Darrow. Offering our app on Android devices is the next step in helping our patients use their mobile devices to improve their care.

Mount Sinai worked with mobile app developer LifeMap Solutions to design and launch the app. LifeMap, a subsidiary of BioTime Inc., is a biotechnology company focused on regenerative medicine.

The release of the MountSinaiNY app on Android devices allows more patients to seamlessly access their health information, communicate with their physician, and schedule appointments, says Mount Sinai chief patient experience officer Sandra Myerson. Research shows that when patients can see their health information, they take greater ownership of their wellness and are more prepared to interact with their providers.

Android phones represented 53.1% of U.S. smartphones in February, according to digital measurement firm comScore Inc.
