The Home Depot Inc. has launched a new app that allows consumers to see how a paint color looks on walls in their house.

Shoppers download the iOS or Android Project Color app, which is separate from the Home Depot app, and take a picture of a room in their house. In app, consumers can select any color in Home Depot’s color catalog and tap a wall to paint it on.

“One of the biggest pain points when attempting a paint project is helping the customer to imagine the colors in their ‘own’ space,” says Samara Tuchband, Home Depot’s general manager of online.

The app can adjust the color in the room to reflect different lighting conditions, such as daylight, incandescent or LED lighting, so shoppers can see how the color looks at different times of day or in various kinds of lighting.

“One of the biggest wins in this experience is that the technology can retain the integrity of all room shadows to give an accurate reflection of how the color will look in a space,” Tuchband says.

Consumers can also tap any item in the picture, such as a decorative pillow or a couch, and the app will recommended two colors that best match that item.

Consumers cannot purchase paint directly in the Project Color app. Once a consumer selects a color she will be redirected to Home Depot’s mobile site where she can specify her brand preference, sheen and container size, and then check out.

Home Depot decided to build the app to give customers more confidence when they are choosing their paint color, Tuchband says. Home Depot’s in-house team led development on the Project Color app while working with a technology vendor that Home Depot would not disclose. The teams delivered the app in less than six months, Tuchband says.
