Italy-based apparel e-retailer Yoox Group S.p.A has launched a mobile shopping app for Chinese consumers that shows them the bestselling items in their locales as well as in the world’s fashion capitals.

The app’s Around You feature shows app users the items that shoppers near them are buying by using a smartphone’s geolocation capability. The app also shows top-selling items in such fashion-focused cities as Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Moscow, Berlin, Tokyo, Shanghai and Milan.

Yoox, No. 184 in the Internet Retailer 2014 Top 500, and No .78 in the Internet Retailer Europe 500, says one-third of its sales in China between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. during the week come from mobile devices as shoppers commute to work. And globally, over the 2014 holiday season, mobile visits accounted for more than half of Yoox.com’s traffic, the retailer says.

In Q3 2014, Chinese consumers spent 230.96 billion yuan ($36.94 billion) on purchases via mobile phones and tablets, up 250.9% from a year earlier, according to Beijing-based research firm iResearch. The firm expects mobile sales to pull ahead of PC sales by 2016.

Yoox, which sells online to consumers in more than 100 countries, started investing in mobile commerce with an in-house mobile team in 2006. It launched its first mobile site and iPhone app in 2009. The Yoox app is available in 11 languages.

In its preliminary 2014 earnings release issued earlier this month, Yoox said its total revenue for “other countries,” which includes China but not Japan, North America or Europe, reached 28.8 million euros ($32.64 million), an increase of about 32.1% from 21.8 million euros ($24.71 million).

In late July, Yoox announced it was setting up a shop on WeChat, a Chinese mobile messaging system with 600 million users, 500 million of whom are in China. Consumers who follow the Yoox online concept store on WeChat can shop directly on the messaging service, including for some products Yoox sells exclusively on WeChat. Users also can read fashion articles, chat online with fashion experts and play social games.
