Mark Carges steps down as chief technology officer for eBay Inc. Steve Fisher takes a different job overseeing technology for marketplaces.

EBay Inc. has lost one of its main technology chiefs but gained another such leader for its marketplaces operations.

Mark Carges has resigned as eBay Inc.’s chief technology officer and senior vice president to deal with what eBay calls a “family matter.” Sources say Carges really does have family issues to deal with and is not being pushed out.

Carges held the job for five years and oversaw technology efforts for such areas as online ticket marketplace Stubhub.com, the payment processing unit PayPal and eBay classifieds, an eBay spokeswoman says.

In a statement, eBay says, “from overhauling search, and steering upgrades to the eBay Enterprise technology portfolio, to accelerating innovation through a number of strategic acquisitions, Mark has been instrumental to eBay’s success. Among his greatest contributions is his effort to develop eBay technologists, expand their careers and increase eBay’s technology presence in India and China.”

EBay bought GSI Commerce in 2011 for approximately $2.4 billion, renaming it eBay Enterprise in 2013. According to Top500Guide.com (Top500Guide.com), the unit provides e-commerce platform services to 23 merchants in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide and eight merchants in the Second 500 Guide.

In related news, eBay also has announced the hiring of Steve Fisher as senior vice president and chief technology officer for eBay Marketplaces. He reports to eBay president Devin Wenig and becomes a member of the Marketplaces executive team. Fisher oversees technology strategy for marketplaces.

He comes from Salesforce.com, where he was executive vice president of technology. Salesforce.com sells Internet-hosted technology and services for managing sales staffs and customer data. The team he led there worked on products used by eBay and more than 100,000 other global clients, the online marketplace says.

“Steve is everything you look for in a CTO: a visionary who understands the technology of today, but is planning for what our business and customers will need five to 10 years from now,” Wenig says. “Steve will help eBay advance its mission to be the global leader in commerce technology.” The hiring follows two other recent executive additions at eBay. Earlier this month eBay hired Google Inc. vet Louis Perrochon as its vice president of engineering. At around the same time, eBay said it had hired Kris Miller as global head of strategy. She comes from consulting firm Bain & Co., where she had worked for 24 years, the online marketplace says.

The chief technology officer moves come in the aftermath of a cyberattack suffered by eBay earlier this year that hit a database storing 145 million encrypted passwords and other “non-financial data.” When announcing the company’s second quarter earnings earlier this year, CEO John Donahoe told analysts that at least 15% of shoppers registered with eBay had not reset their passwords, and that buying activity was reduced even among some who had.
