Sellers on eBay Inc. can print their own FedEx labels at home and also receive shipping discounts under a new program launched this week by the online marketplace. The move is the latest recent effort in e-commerce to sweeten delivery options for shoppers and retailers.

“Sellers will soon be able to print FedEx labels through eBay’s single label printing flow, right from My eBay,” the company says, referring to where eBay participants can keep track of their activity. “The program has just been launched as a pilot to a limited number of sellers, with full availability in the first quarter of next year.”

Sellers using the service can receive discounts of up to 37%, depending on the volume of what they ship; eBay did not immediately detail that volume. Sellers can use the labels for such FedEx delivery services as Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day, Express Saver, Ground and  Home Delivery.

EBay previously enabled its sellers to print labels for shipments sent via the U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Inc. FedEx shipments generally required a trip by the seller to a FedEx provider.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Postal Service said it would test same-day delivery in San Francisco of items bought from online retailers, including at their physical stores. The announcement of that test came after Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and eBay each announced their own same-day delivery tests. The moves would appear designed to counter Amazon.com Inc., which offers same-day delivery in 10 markets.
