Macy’s will build a new fulfillment center in 2011 to keep up with web sales growth.

Macy’s Inc. has announced it will build a new fulfillment center in West Virginia to keep up with growing online sales. The company says online sales have grown 29% in the first 10 months of 2010 compared to the same period last year.

“Our Internet sales continue to grow rapidly as part of the omni-channel strategy at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s allowing customers to shop seamlessly in stores, online and via mobile devices in a manner that meets their needs and preferences,” says Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and CEO at Macy’s, No. 20 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. “This center will include the very latest material handling equipment and warehouse management systems so we can fill orders quickly and efficiently.”

The new 1.3 million-square-foot facility, which will be located along interstate highway 81 in Berkeley County, WV, will ship orders placed on Macys.com. In September, Macy’s announced that it was expanding a fulfillment center near Portland, TN, to handle online orders. The company also has a distribution center in Goodyear, AZ, to ship Macys.com products. Bloomingdales.com orders are fulfilled through a primary center in Cheshire, CT.

Construction on the new fulfillment center will begin in spring 2011 and operations are scheduled to begin in April 2012.
