Consumers all over the world are clicking around the web to find the products they desire, and there are no national boundaries online to keep them from reaching your website. In fact, foreign shoppers are flocking to the websites of North American retailers—nearly 14% of traffic to Internet Retailer Top 1000 e-commerce sites come from outside of the U.S. or Canada. And North America’s top online retailers are responding to that demand from overseas shoppers: Nearly half of the Top 1000 ship to countries like the United Kingdom and Germany and more than a third to China, Russia and Mexico.
Part of the growth in cross-border e-commerce comes from the fact that fulfilling orders to foreign countries is easier than ever because the demand from international shoppers has led delivery companies and other vendors to upgrade their cross-border services. And that’s not the only way to reach international consumers via the web. Many Top 1000 retailers are selling effectively through large online marketplaces and 72 of the Top 1000 operate their own country-specific e-commerce sites outside of North America.
The E-Retailer Global Expansion Report provides concrete examples of how retailers and brands, both large and small, are overcoming the obstacles to international web sales, and highlights the lessons they’ve learned in the process.
