During the pandemic, many retail chains invested heavily in omnichannel offerings like curbside pickup and buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS), which caused online sales to soar. But by 2021, these services were less of a catalyst for ecommerce growth.

Each year, Digital Commerce 360 ranks the top North American online merchants by annual web sales in the Top 1000. The top 15 retail chains in the rankings by 2021 web sales growth had a median increase of 43.3% — a far cry from the performance of the top 15 the year before. Comparatively, the 2020 cohort registered a median growth of 184.4%.
