The Vermont Flannel acquisition will employ more than 70 in Vermont through the combined company, as well as remote employees in other states.

Owners of the Vermont Flannel Company announced their acquisition of Vermont Teddy Bear, the largest manufacturer of teddy bears in North America.

The Vermont Flannel Company has six retail locations throughout Vermont, and two of them operate as production facilities. It plans to open another location in Waterbury, Vermont, in summer 2024, and it has two more retail locations in Maine. Meanwhile, Vermont Teddy Bear operates its factory and flagship retail store in Shelburne, Vermont.

“I’ve been a fan of Vermont Teddy Bear for a long time,” said Vermont Flannel CEO Joe Van Deman in a statement. “The experience here in Shelburne, the quality of the bears and the way the company gives back to the community are all truly amazing. It’s a really special place.”

Vermont Flannel acquisition ‘makes so much sense’

The Vermont Flannel acquisition will employ more than 70 in Vermont through the combined company, also employing remote employees in other states.

Both companies have created “memorable experiences of something that is uniquely Vermont,” Van Deman said. “You can’t come to Vermont without stopping at the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory or taking home a piece of Vermont Flannel with you, and you can’t leave either company’s stores without a warm smile on your face.”

Vermont Teddy Beat was founded in 1981, and says all its bears are stuffed using 100% recycled materials. A decade later, Vermont Flannel was founded in 1991.

“I am so thrilled to bring these two iconic Vermont brands together,” said Vermont Teddy Bear CEO Bill Shouldice. “Both companies have a rich history of creating warmth, comfort and wonderful memories for locals and visitors to Vermont alike. It makes so much sense for the next chapter of Vermont Teddy Bear.”

Prior to the Vermont Flannel acquisition, Vermont Teddy Bear Co. was No. 739 in the Top 1000. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking North America’s largest online retailers by their web sales.
