The "for U" Albertsons loyalty program will unify its points currency and add a cash-redemption option at checkout.

The Albertsons loyalty program debuted a new points and rewards system on April 1. The “for U” program first launched in 2021. Going forward, it will use a refreshed process that the grocer says will streamline how customers accumulate and redeem points when they shop.

In changing the for U program, Albertsons will implement a single points-based system, double the amount of time allotted for earning points and add a new automatic option for converting points directly to cash.

Albertsons is No. 26 in the Top 1000, Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of North America’s leading retailers by online sales. The grocer is also the second largest retailer in the Food & Beverage category of the Top 1000.

How the new ‘for U’ program will work

As of April 1, enrolled members in the for U program will accumulate points in a unified currency. Those points will be earned for each dollar they spend on qualifying purchases. Each 100 points will be redeemable for certain discounts, on both groceries and gas.

In addition, Albertsons is extending the timeframe for accumulation and redemption to two months, which is twice what the program previously allowed.

When converting points to cash, the company will introduce a process it refers to as “automatic cash off.” Customers will be able to use that option at checkout for what Albertsons calls “a more seamless savings experience.”

The loyalty program extends to all stores within the Albertsons portfolio, including ACME, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Randalls, Safeway, Shaw’s and Vons.

Why Albertsons is updating its loyalty program

“Our loyal for U members are at the heart of our business, and we are continuously working to help them bring more to the table and foster lifelong customer relationships,” said Sean Barrett, chief marketing officer for Albertsons Cos, in a released statement. “The updated for U loyalty program delivers tremendous savings and value through a simple points-based system, ensuring that it is easier and more convenient than ever for our valued members to get rewarded for shopping with us.”

Total enrollment in the Albertsons for U program stood at 38 million members as of March 2023, according to the company.

The program will still provide other existing benefits as the company hopes to make for U a more simple and easier-to-use experience.

As of December 2023, the total number of sites operating under Albertsons-owned banners included 2,271 retail food and drug stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia.
