One of the largest health systems in the southeast U.S. has a new chief digital officer.

The Novant Health network, which consists of more than 1,200 physicians and 25,000 employees at nearly 500 locations, including 14 medical centers and hundreds of outpatient facilities and physician clinics, has named Angela Yochem as chief digital officer.

In a newly created role, Yochem will develop a strategy for how Novant Health can improve patient engagement, the health system says. Additionally, she will lead the implementation of systemwide digital media programs including design, development, operations and support.

Yochem will start in January and will report to Novant Health president and CEO Carl Armato. Yochem has an extensive background in digital technology applications and development in healthcare.

Previously, Yochem served as the chief information officer and executive vice president of digital channels at Rent-A-Center in Plano, Texas. In this role, she restructured the technology division and defined new digital channels for the company.

Before Rent-A-Center, Yochem served as the global chief information officer at BDP International, a large privately held logistics company and as drug maker AstraZeneca’s first global chief technology officer in Wilmington, Delaware.

Yochem received her bachelor’s degree in music from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and her master’s degree in computer science from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Novant Health has an established digital healthcare base. In June, Novant Health, No. 62 in the Internet Health Management 2017 Digital Hospital 500, integrated its electronic health records system into one shared health information network for the Charlotte, N.C., region with Carolinas HealthCare System,, No. 67.

Carolinas, which runs a Cerner Corp. electronic records system, and Novant, which operates on a system from Epic Systems Inc., will operate one shared electronic health network with a data repository of nine million records. The patient information available typically includes demographics, test results, transcribed documents, medical diagnoses and visit summaries.

Novant Health also offers other advanced digital features for patients including online appointment scheduling and viewing wait times for emergency rooms and walk-in clinics.
