Total retail sales grew just 0.3% in June over May 2014, but non-store sales—which includes Internet retailers—grew 0.9%.

The Commerce Department released its U.S. retail sales figures for June 2014 yesterday, and retail sales grew modestly from the previous month, recording just a 0.3% gain. However, sales were up 4.1% from June 2013, and sales in the second quarter improved 2.4% over the first quarter of 2014 and 4.5% over the second quarter of 2013.

The department also releases figures for non-store retailers, which primarily reflects sales of Internet retailers. Non-store sales in June were up 0.9% from May 2014 and 8.1% from June 2013. Non-store sales in the second quarter of 2014 were up 2.1% from the first quarter of 2014 and 7.5% from the second quarter of 2013.

Non-store sales in the second quarter totaled more than $111 billion, while total retail sales topped $1.2 trillion. For June 2014, total retail sales were $391.5 billion and non-store sales $36.7 million.

The only category to record more than 1% growth over May 2014 was general merchandise stores, with a growth rate of 1.1%. Non-stores sales recorded the highest growth over June 2013. Auto and other motor vehicle dealers recorded the highest growth rates for the second quarter, with 5.3% growth compared with the first quarter of 2014 and 9.4% over the second quarter of 2013.

Commerce Department estimates are based on a survey of more than 4,900 U.S. retail and food service merchants. The department will release its e-commerce sales figures for the second quarter of 2014 on Aug. 15.

The quarter’s strong growth was confirmed by MarketLive’s client data. “Across MarketLive’s customer base we’ve seen an average increase of 19.4% year over year  in revenue over the Q2 period, according to the MarketLive Performance Index,” says CEO and founder Ken Burke. “All sectors of our business saw an increase so we are not seeing this slow down.”
