Google will offer next-day delivery of online orders from Fresno north to the Oregon border. This is an extension of Google Shopping Express, which offers same-day delivery of orders from such major retailers as Staples, Walgreen and Target to shoppers in the San Francisco/Silicon Valley area.

Google is making further inroads into Amazon.com Inc.’s fast-shipping territory: The search giant announced this week it will expand its Google Shopping Express shipping options to include next-day delivery across Northern California. That comes less than a year after launching its Shopping Express service, which offers same-day shipping to consumers, in Silicon Valley and San Francisco.

The new overnight shipping option is available now in cities in the East Bay area of San Francisco, including Berkeley, Fremont and Oakland. Over the next few months, the service will expand to cities as far south as Fresno and as far north as the California-Oregon border. Customers need to order by 7 p.m. to receive the shipment the next day.

Google began testing the same-day delivery service in March 2013 with select consumers in the San Francisco Bay area. It expanded the service to a delivery zone from San Francisco to San Jose later that year.

Retailers involved in the original testing included Staples Inc., No. 3 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide; Target Corp., No. 18; Toys ‘R’ Us Inc., No. 34; Walgreen Co., No. 43; and American Eagle Outfitters Inc., No. 66. The test also involved such local merchants as Blue Bottle Coffee, Palo Alto Toy & Sport and Raley’s Nob Hill Foods.

All of those merchants have signed on to the overnight delivery service in Northern California. Large retailers joining the service include Costco Wholesale Corp., No. 14; Office Depot Inc., No. 9; and REI, No. 69.

Google is offering a six-month free trial for consumers who sign up for a Shopping Express membership. That offer expires on June 30. Google did not release prices for membership, but the delivery charge for each store without a membership is $4.99. For example, if a consumer orders two T-shirts from REI, the delivery charge is $4.99. But if the consumers orders one T-shirt from REI and one pair of shorts from Target, the delivery charge is $9.98.

Consumers pay for purchases on Google Shopping Express with Google Wallet, which stores a consumer’s payment card and address information for fast checkout.
