The office supplies chain follows the lead of The Home Depot and others.

OfficeMax Inc. has become the latest retail chain to enable consumers to order items online for pickup inside stores.

OfficeMax Online Store Pickup requires no minimum purchase, says the office supplies chain, which is No. 12 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. A consumer making a purchase on OfficeMax.com selects the desired store location for pickup, with orders generally available the same day, assuming the product is in stock. The retailer provides information on availability  during the online checkout.

The chain says that orders placed less than two hours before a store’s closing time may have to wait until the following day for pickup. An e-mail sent to the consumer will confirm the order is ready.

“This is part of an enhanced multichannel experience that allows customers to shop seamlessly between OfficeMax.com and our stores at no additional charge,” says Jim Barr, OfficeMax executive vice president and chief digital officer. “With OfficeMax Online Store Pickup, they can shop online anywhere, anytime, with the ability to pick up select orders that same day without having to pay shipping charges.”

Last year, The Home Depot, No. 42 in the Top 500, launched a similar store pickup service. Earlier this month, Toys ‘R’ Us Inc., No. 29, debuted a service that enables consumers to pay at store registers, including with cash, for orders made online.
