The merchant is now one of a small group of retailers with iPad apps.

Virtually every retailer in mobile commerce has an m-commerce web site. Many have smartphone apps. But very few have iPad apps. However, that’s slowly changing as traffic to retail web sites from the Apple Inc. tablet soars.

On the heels of Walmart.com and Overstock.com Inc. recently debuting iPad apps, Saks Fifth Avenue has released one of its own. The new app, available in Apple’s App Store, enables customers to browse, search and buy products from Saks’ complete line of fashion, jewelry, beauty and home products.

The iPad app features a section devoted to Saks Fashionfix, which includes a calendar of in-store events. Through integration with the iPad calendar, shoppers can add Saks events to their personal calendars. The app also features a store locator based on the device’s GPS technology.

App users can create wish lists and share those lists with friends and family through e-mail, Facebook and Twitter. And they can learn more about fashion through a section called Saks Style, which features look books, videos, catalogs and the SaksPOV blog. Further, the Saks print catalog has been optimized for viewing on the iPad.

And the app offers personalization features. A customer can select her favorite designers, colors, sizes and store to receive customized information based on these preferences. Mobile personalization allows a customer to be more engaged with the Saks Fifth Avenue brand, the company says, and connect in new ways to stores and merchandise.
