Sona Chawla, former vice president of global online business at Dell, has been named to the new post of senior vice president of e-commerce. She will oversee a team dedicated to building the sales, service and customer experience of Walgreens.com.

Walgreen Co. Inc. has chosen an online executive from computer maker Dell Inc. to fill a new e-commerce position as the multi-channel drugstore retailer seeks to boost its online presence.

Sona Chawla will be senior vice president of e-commerce at Walgreen, overseeing a team dedicated to building the sales, service and customer experience of Walgreens.com while driving store traffic from the web and improving online profitability. She will assume her new position July 1. Walgreen is No. 70 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, while Dell is No. 4.

With this new position, we are making a significant investment to take our online marketing and sales channel to a higher level, says Walgreen chairman and CEO Jeffrey A. Rein. Sona is an online expert who has honed her skills at both Wells Fargo and Dell, as well as at consulting firms earlier in her career. She’s a sharp leader with strong analytical skills and strategic agility. Every bit as important is her reputation as a top-notch manager who brings out the best in people and strongly supports her team.

Chawla was vice president of global online business at Dell, which she joined in 2006. From 2000 to 2006 she worked at banking company Wells Fargo & Company. She started as senior vice president of enterprise Internet services, was named executive president of web channel management in 2003 and executive vice president of online sales, service and marketing in 2005. Prior to Wells Fargo, Chawla spent 10 years with consulting firms.
