Sales on B2B ecommerce sites grew by 10% to $1.39 trillion and, combined with e-procurement sales, B2B ecommerce sales increased by 11.8% to $2.19 trillion.
And while many B2B sellers anticipate further growth in digital commerce in 2021, the growth this past year was highly uneven across many industries, depending in large measure upon the impact COVID-19 had on specific markets.
That trend was especially apparent in B2B marketplaces, which emerged in 2020 as a mainstream digital sales channel and as forums for bringing together new groups of business buyers and sellers that otherwise might not have met. “The pandemic accelerated the rollout and investment in B2B marketplaces, especially in industries such as chemicals that used to be behind the times with going online,” says Paul do Forno, managing director, Deloitte Digital.
