While consumers around the world show varying behaviors in the way they shop online, many continue to purchase online form retailers outside their home market. That’s especially true in China. Cross-border e-commerce purchases by Chinese consumers grew 86% to 219.8 billion yuan ($31.99 billion) in 2016, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics.
Despite the healthy demand in China for foreign goods, many large U.S.-based merchants and brands have yet to tap into the market. Some brands may sell their wares via Tmall Global or other online marketplaces, but only 37% of the U.S. e-retailers ranked in the Global 1000 accept online orders from China on their own website.
