Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to invest $1 billion in Marysville, Ohio, by 2030.
The plans reinforce the state’s growing role as a key hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The investment will establish a new data center in Marysville. It will also create at least 25 direct jobs and support hundreds of additional jobs in construction, logistics, and maintenance. AWS expects to begin operations at the new facility by 2027.
AWS has already made significant commitments to Ohio. It said it plans to invest $10 billion in data center infrastructure across the state by 2030. This includes new facilities in Sunbury, Fayette County, and now Marysville. The company has been steadily increasing its presence in Ohio since establishing its first data centers in the region a decade ago. AWS’s continued expansion highlights Ohio’s importance as a strategic location for its global cloud infrastructure.
Amazon ranks No. 1 in Digital Commerce 360’s Top 2000 Database. The database is how Digital Commerce 360 tracks the largest North American online retailers by their annual ecommerce sales. Amazon is also No. 3 in Digital Commerce 360’s Global Online Marketplaces Database. That database ranks the 100 largest global marketplaces by third-party gross merchandise value (GMV).
AWS adds $1 billion investment
AWS’s decision to expand in Ohio reflects the state’s increasing prominence as a center for data infrastructure. Ohio has emerged as a strategic location for data centers due to its affordable land, reliable power grid, and business-friendly policies. The $1 billion AWS investment in Marysville is part of a broader trend in Central Ohio, where major technology firms — including Amazon, Facebook, and Google — have been building data centers to meet growing demand for cloud computing and AI-powered applications.
The rise of AI and machine learning has accelerated the need for larger and more powerful data centers. AI-driven applications require significantly more computing power than traditional cloud services, driving the expansion of data infrastructure. Ohio’s robust electric grid and low energy costs make it an ideal location to support the intense power demands of AI operations.
State and local policies have also played a key role in attracting AWS and other tech giants. Ohio’s data center sales tax exemption has created a business-friendly environment. Meanwhile, communities like Marysville have welcomed tech investment to diversify their local economies. The state’s central location and well-developed transportation and utility infrastructure further enhance its appeal for large-scale data center projects.
“AWS is proud to reinforce our long-term commitment to Ohio with this expansion in Marysville,” said Roger Wehner, vice president of economic development at AWS. “We look forward to collaborating with local leaders to strengthen the local workforce and support the city’s long-term growth.”
Through 2023, AWS’s investments in Ohio have supported over 4,700 jobs and contributed approximately $3.8 billion to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP). AWS’s expansion will strengthen Ohio’s position as a leader in cloud infrastructure and AI, ensuring the state remains a key player in the rapidly evolving tech economy.
