Cleveland Clinic has a new chief information officer.

Cleveland Clinic, the top-ranked institution in Internet Health Management’s recently published Digital Hospital 500, has named Edward Marx as the its next CIO.

Marx, who begin his duties on Sept. 1, most recently held the position of executive vice president at the Advisory Board Co., a healthcare research, technology and consulting company. At Advisory Board, Marx worked on information technology leadership and strategy for NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest public healthcare system in the nation.

Previously, he spent eight years as chief information officer at Texas Health Resources, following five years as CIO at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

Marx replaces Doug Smith, who was named as interim CIO at Cleveland Clinic in October.

He has extensive experience in large-scale information technology and digital healthcare project management. While CIO at University Hospitals, Marx was responsible for enterprise information technology strategy, tactics and operational excellence. In that post he managed a $65 million operating budget, a $60 million capital budget and provided oversight to a $188 million electronic health records implementation, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“Ed has spent his career fostering a culture of innovation and leading teams at the forefront of healthcare information technology,” says Cleveland Clinic president and CEO Toby Cosgrove. “As CIO he will advance the Cleveland Clinic’s ‘Patients First’ culture by providing information-enabled, data-driven technology focused on facilitating world-class patient care.”

Marx received a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Master of Science in design, merchandising, and consumer sciences from Colorado State University.
