Steve Turner will take over as the new CIO at Walgreens on April 1 from Abhi Dhar, who is leaving the drugstore chain and health services delivery company to launch a new digital marketing and technology service company for retailers.

As the incoming CIO, Turner, who currently works as Walgreens’ vice president, service delivery & infrastructure, has a long track record in overseeing and managing e-commerce and mobile operations. Turner joined Walgreens in 2009 as director of e-commerce site operations. Beginning in November 2010 Turner served as director of project management office, data and photo engineering. From 2012 until his current assignment, Turner worked as senior director, digital and mobile technology operations.

“Steve’s experience and his deep knowledge of our systems position him well to move into this new role,” Walgreens says in announcing his appointment.

Walgreens didn’t provide details on Dhar’s new venture. Dahr joined Walgreens in 2009 as group vice president and chief technology officer in charge of digital and consumer mobile from CIO of TravelClick.com. He was named Walgreens’ CIO in November 2014.

Turner takes over at a time when Walgreens continues to build out its digital healthcare program with health-focused companies including WebMD.com.

Walgreens and health content provider WebMD are working on a new digital healthcare program called Relief Advisor. The program, rolled out in February, allows consumers to enter symptoms online and receive medically reviewed health information from WebMD including treatment advice, as well as the active ingredients patients should look for when buying over-the-counter products to treat their cold, cough and flu, WebMD CEO Steve Zatz told Wall Street analysts on the company’s recent year-end earnings call according to a transcript on SeekingAlpha.com. Relief Advisor is available through both Walgreens and WebMD’s desktop and mobile sites, Zatz says.

The new program aims to enhance the relationship WebMD has with the retail pharmacy chain, says Greg Orr, Walgreens vice president of digital health.

In January 2015, Walgreens and WebMD launched Your Digital Health Advisor, a virtual wellness coaching program that enables users to create customized goals and action plans that support lifestyle changes. Participants can engage in interactive programs that help them stop smoking, manage their weight, provide nutrition advice, and offer exercise and emotional health tips and guidance. Walgreens pharmacy chat health experts also are available online to provide live coaching and encourage positive lifestyle choices and healthy behaviors, Walgreens says.

As part of its alliance with WebMD, Walgreens also has integrated its balance rewards program into WebMD’s Healthy Target mobile health improvement program and users can refill and transfer Walgreens’ prescriptions on the WebMD mobile app, Walgreens says.
