StellaService also finds that at least nine major e-retailers missed on-time holiday deliveries.

The four e-retailers with the “most aggressive” cutoff dates for Christmas deliveries managed to deliver packages by the holiday, says StellaService Inc. in a new report that measures e-commerce deliveries. The report examined 40 online retailers.

The customer service monitoring service says that Apple Inc. (No. 2 in the Internet Retailer 2014 Top 500 Guide), Dell Inc. (No. 10), Nordstrom Inc. (No. 24) and Amazon.com Inc.-owned Zappos each offered consumers the chance to order items up to Dec. 23 for Christmas delivery. “All four retailers delivered packages by Christmas,” the report says.

StellaService had representatives in four regions throughout the United States place an order from each e-retailer in the study on the date the merchant specified was the cutoff date for guaranteed delivery by Christmas day. If a retailer had no stated cutoff date, StellaService “calculated the date based on the delivery estimate for standard shipping or free expedited shipping,” the report says.

The report finds nine retailers missed on-time deliveries to at least one region: Best Buy Co. Inc. (No. 15), Costco Wholesale Corp. (No. 14), Crate and Barrel (No. 77), J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (No. 37), Kohl’s Corp. (No. 23), Macy’s Inc. (No. 8), Staples Inc. (No. 3), Toys ‘R’ Us Inc. (No. 34) and Wayfair Inc. (No. 45). Immediate comment from those retailers was not available. Of those retailers, Staples, Macy’s and Kohl’s missed similar deliveries last year, StellaService says.

UPS Inc. was the most popular carrier for shipments analyzed for this study, accounting for 59% of deliveries compared with 34% for FedEx Corp. (StellaService did not immediately say which carrier accounted for the rest of the deliveries.)

The report also says that Nike, Dell and Estee Lauder each “extended their cutoff dates … and succeeded.” Nike went from Dec. 19 to Dec. 22; Dell from Dec. 17 to Dec. 23, and Estee Lauder from Dec. 20 to Dec. 22.
