Tom Conophy previously worked at InterContinental Hotels Group.

Staples Inc. has hired Tom Conophy as its executive vice president and chief information officer. He’ll oversee the office supplies retailer’s information technology across its various online and offline business units except its e-commerce-focused technology labs in Cambridge, MA and Seattle, WA. Staples’ executive vice president of global e-commerce, Faisal Masud, oversees those labs.

Conophy will report to Ron Sargent, Staples’ chairman and chief executive officer.

Conophy had been executive vice president and chief information officer at InterContinental Hotels Group PLC, where he worked on the company’s mobile and loyalty marketing initiatives , according to Staples. He has also worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. and United Airlines Inc.

“His broad background, with an emphasis on the customer experience, will prove particularly valuable as we expand our assortment beyond office supplies, grow our online capabilities and focus on product-related services,” Sargent says.

Staples last month announced plans to expand its online business-to-business and consumer product offerings to more than 1 million SKUs, including new categories such as power tools, medical devices and garden supplies. That’s up from about 200,000 SKUs today. Staples is No. 2 in the 2013 Top 500 Guide.
