The expansion will add 20 new positions and 345,000 square feet

Department store chain Belk Inc. announced it will expand its e-commerce distribution and fulfillment center located in Jonesville, SC, for the second time in just over a year.

“Belk’s e-commerce business continues to grow, and with it the demand for increased distribution and fulfillment operations. Our Jonesville facility has been a key factor in our Belk.com growth, and we are pleased to be able to invest additional resources in and to bring additional jobs to Union County,” president and CEO John R. Belk says.

In December 2013, Belk announced an expansion to the Union County distribution facility, and its intention to hire an additional 170 personnel by January 2015.

This week, the company released details on the second expansion project, stating that the total investment will be $47 million, bringing the total cost of the investment to $93 million. The latest expansion will add nearly 345,000 square feet to the 515,000-square-foot facility. It will create 20 more jobs in addition to the expected 170 newly-created positions, bringing the Jonesville facility’s presence to 314 employees, Belk says.

Belk, No. 138 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, saw its web sales grow 42.5% to $192.6 million in 2013, and grew e-commerce sales by more than 86% in 2012. The company launched its first e-commerce site in 2001.
