Mark Breitbard was president of Gap North America.

Children’s apparel retailer Gymboree Corp. has hired a CEO.

Mark Breitbard will take over the job on Jan. 14, replacing interim CEO Kip Garcia, who resumes his former duties as president. Gymboree is No. 325 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

Breitbard comes from Gap Inc., No. 22 in the Top 500. He was most recently president of Gap North America for the apparel retailer. Before that, he was executive vice president of GapKids and babyGap, Gymboree says.

His history with Gap stretches back to at least 1997; he also was president of U.S. retail at Levi Strauss & Co. and worked as an executive at Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Gymboree says.

“I am thrilled by the opportunity to join Gymboree, an established leader in the children’s apparel market with strong brands, a loyal and valuable customer franchise, a values-based culture and a passionate team,” says Breitbard. “I look forward to working with our associates and leadership team to build on the strategies they’ve developed and drive our growth opportunities.”

Gap, meanwhile, says that Tom Sands, executive vice president of its Old Navy brand, will replace Breitbard in his previous position.
