The e-retailer says the new mobile app design takes advantage of tablets’ larger screens.

Amazon.com Inc. has updated its Kindle for Android mobile application to improve the experience consumers have accessing Kindle services via Android-powered tablet computers.

The previous Kindle for Android mobile app, released last summer, was designed for Android-powered smartphones, not tablets, which have larger screens. The new version of the app is designed to make it more appealing to shop Amazon’s Kindle Store on tablet computers that run on Google’s Android Honeycomb operating system, such as the Motorola Xoom, and to read digital content on those tablets.

Amazon says the updated app makes it easier for consumers to look up words in its built-in dictionary and provides quick access to personalized product recommendations and customer reviews. The e-retailer also changed the way magazine and newspaper content appears in the app to take advantage of tablets’ larger screens.

“We’ve taken all the features customers love about Kindle for Android, and created a beautiful new user interface and shopping experience tailored to the look and feel of Honeycomb tablets,” says Dorothy Nicholls, director of Amazon Kindle.

The free app is available for download via Amazon’s Appstore for Android at Amazon.com. Amazon is the No. 1 e-retailer in Internet Retailer’s Top 500 Guide.
