While Staples wants to pay about $2.1 billion to acquire all the assets of rival office suppliers company Office Depot, the latter says it has a better idea that involves keeping its B2B business, which accounts for about half its revenue.
The distributor of industrial and construction products said average daily ecommerce sales rose year over year by 38.3% in the fourth quarter of last year, as total net sales for the quarter increased by 6.4% year over year to $1.36 billion, the company said Wednesday.
As it approaches $1 billion in sales and deals with the ongoing impact of the pandemic, the distributor’s new branding tag line—“We Can Supply That”—coincides with the company’s desire to make its B2B ecommerce site “more welcoming” to customers during the pandemic and beyond, CEO Barry Litwin says. As its fastest-growing channel, ecommerce is helping to drive double-digit increases in sales for the provider of industrial and residential lubricants, cleansers and other maintenance products in the United States and in several overseas markets, the company said last week.
