The world’s online marketplaces are redefining ecommerce. They grew their total ecommerce sales last year by 20% to $1.66 trillion, and now account for 58% of global ecommerce revenue, according to Internet Retailer’s just-released 2019 Online Marketplaces Report.

As web shoppers discover the breadth of products and lower prices often available on top marketplaces—particularly the ones operated by Amazon and Alibaba—it’s forcing all e­retailers to develop more aggressive marketplace strategies, including offering many more products on existing marketplaces or launching marketplaces of their own by inviting other merchants to sell on their websites.
