Apparel retail chain J. Crew experienced an outage on its e-commerce site on the Monday after Christmas 2016. Shoppers who tried to buy online at that day found a site that didn’t work, and didn’t come back online until the next morning. Based on customer comments, the technical issue also affected in-store redemption of gift cards and returns. Once the site was back up and running, the retailer sent emails to customers with the subject line that read “24 hours only: extra 50% off sale, in stores & online,” and in the body of the email, a note acknowledging the outage that read “Apologies for any site issues today (we’re officially renaming this our ‘crash sale’).”
