Europe ecommerce sales and growth by category

The European ecommerce landscape

Each year, the Digital Commerce 360 research team analyzes and ranks the leading ecommerce companies headquartered in Europe in our Europe Database. These leading 500 European companies include some of the world’s most iconic brands such as LVMH, which owns:

  • Louis Vuitton
  • Tiffany & Co.
  • Dior
  • Fendi
  • Tag Heuer
  • Bulgari
  • Givenchi
  • Marc Jacobs
  • Sephora, and many more

Other iconic brands such as Adidas, Puma, L’Oreal, Dyson, EssilorLuxottica, The Armani Group and Lego Group all reside in the Europe Database. We rank them by annual web sales alongside some of Europe’s largest retail chains, Ahold Delhaize, IKEA and LDLC.

Below, we analyze the 14 online categories in our Europe Database, and how they compare to one another, but also how they compare to the Top 500. The Top 500 ranks the leading 500 retailers in North America by annual web sales. Most of them are U.S.-based companies.

Overall, the Europe 500 grew 2.8% in 2022 to $350 billion, coming off 17.2% growth in 2021 and a whopping 38.4% in 2020. This trend is nothing new to global ecommerce. The U.S. saw similar trends from 2020 to 2022.
