Share of Next 1000 retail chains offering BOPIS jumps in 2021

The percentage of Next 1000 retail chains offering buy online, pick up in store jumped nearly 16 percentage points in 2021 with 60.2% of retail chains offering the feature. As fears of contagion ebbed in 2021, that might explain why curbside pickup dropped nearly 10 percentage points with 26.5% of Next 1000 retails offering the feature compared with 36.1% in 2020 — people weren’t as scared of catching COVID and shopped in-store instead. Next 1000 merchants tend to be smaller and less likely to have the expansive network of stores some of the larger retail chains possess. The median number of stores for Next 1000 retail chains is 28, compared with 285 stores for retail chains in Top 1000. The retailers in the Next 1000 that offered BOPIS or curbside in 2021 collectively grew their web sales 25.2% in 2021, slightly faster than the Next 1000’s collective growth of 22.8%. The group of merchants that did not offer this omnichannel fulfillment option grew collective sales by 22.0%.
