Ecommerce in Australia

Ecommerce down under is booming, says new research from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Australia is the 11th-largest ecommerce market in the world, and revenue is predicted to reach $32.3 billion as soon as next year, the International Trade Administration says. Ecommerce, which is expected to reach $27.8 billion in 2022, is growing annually at rate of about 16%. In comparison, the traditional retail market is growing at a rate of about 3.4%, says the International Trade Administration.

89% of ecommerce purchases in Australia are domestic. And with over 13 million active Facebook users in Australia, social media is big driver in promoting B2C transactions. Credit and debit cards account for 40% of online payments, and more than a quarter (26.4%) of all ecommerce transactions in Australia occur via mobile phone.

Furthermore, eBay has the largest ecommerce presence in Australia. It has 69 million monthly visits in Australia, which is more than triple Amazon’s monthly visits there (22.5 million). Woolworths has 20.4 million monthly visitors, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration.
