Sustainability is a core part of women’s denim brand Boyish.com: 60% of the brand manufacturer’s jeans are 100% plant-based; it publishes its carbon footprint in its 2020 annual sustainability report (1,073 metric tons) accompanying how it offsets those emissions; and integrates an environmental footprint calculator on its product detail pages to highlight the positive impacts of its products, such as how many days of drinking water that product saved because it was made sustainably.

Also part of its sustainability mission is to reduce its return rate. When a shopper purchases a product on Boyish.com that she wants to return, that’s two shipments. If she exchanges the product for another size, that’s three, says Brandon Puda, manager of web and technology for the brand.

“If we can get the customer a product that works for them in one shipment, that’s fantastic. If not, that’s three shipments for that one order,” Puda says. “That ends up to be a lot of time—time to process everything—and it’s not a great experience for the customer, and adding to our carbon emissions increase.”

Boyish does offer free return shipping but charges a flat $8 restocking fee. For exchanges, it will ship the product for free.
