Ecommerce penetration by category

In 13 of 14 categories tracked in the Top 1000, web sales as a percentage of total sales grew in 2018 compared with 2017. Collectively, all retailers ranked in the Internet Retailer Top 1000 had an average ecommerce penetration of 58.4%. This means 58.4% of total sales by Top 1000 companies were on the web, as opposed to sales in stores or catalogs. In 2018, this figure grew 1.4 percentage points to 59.8%.

This data analysis shows the growth in ecommerce penetration of Top 1000 retailers in each of the 14 merchandise categories.
