Gunjan Bhow joins Walgreens at a critical time as the company fights to shake off a disappointing fiscal 2019 second quarter and keep pace in a competitive healthcare ecommerce race with CVS Health and Amazon, among others.

Walgreen Boots Alliance Inc. literally went to Disneyland to find and hire its new chief digital officer.

Walgreens, which generated estimated online sales of about $1.70 billion last year, according  to research in the recently published  67-page Healthcare E-Commerce Report produced by Internet Health Management and Internet Retailer, has named Gunjan Bhow as its chief digital officer.

Walgreens named him as chief digital officer in January. “Gunjan will lead the development of digital and physical customer solutions for WBA,” says a Walgreens spokesman.

Bhow has extensive experience in big-brand ecommerce, having worked for both The Walt Disney Co. and Amazon.com Inc.

Prior to joining Walgreens, Bhow worked for Disney for five years as the senior vice president and general manager of digital, mobile and ecommerce. Prior to Disney he also worked as general manager, digital and mobile products at Amazon.

Bhow, who has a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard, has worked as vice president and general manager of Plantonics, an audio communications equipment maker, and as head of products for VoSKY, a developer of software and hardware that connects Skype with enterprise Private Branch Exchange (PBX) systems.
