Online sales of furniture and other home goods are soaring and Amazon.com Inc., the largest online retailer in North America, has emerged as the dominant player. Its market share in the category is slightly greater than the combined share of the top six online retailers that specialize in furniture and home goods.

Experts point to several advantages that Amazon has over its competitors in the space: It has a ubiquitous brand, an improving online experience when it comes to navigating home goods and an extremely loyal customer base. Given that positioning, many expect Amazon’s market share in the category to continue to grow—especially in the furniture subcategory. But there are no guarantees.
