The retailer is expanding beyond RVs and camping gear to appeal to a broader range of outdoor enthusiasts.

Camping World Holdings Inc. is bringing another retailer under its tent with the acquisition of Erewhon Mountain Outfitters, a specialty apparel retailer based in the Midwest. The deal is the fourth retailer that Camping World has bought in the past nine months.

Terms of the deal, announced Wednesday, were not released. Camping World is No. 306 in the Internet Retailer 2017 Top 500.

“Erehwon has a history of being a top player in the outdoor market since 1972,” Marcus Lemonis, chairman of Camping World Holding, said. “This acquisition strengthens Camping World Holding’s efforts to build a seamless approach to the outdoor lifestyle market and further positions the company to expand the reach and product offerings of our e-commerce business.”

The acquisition highlights the company’s “commitment to an omnichannel approach to penetrating the outdoor lifestyle market,” Lemonis said. Erewhon (which is “nowhere” spelled backward) is the latest acquisition for Camping World, which sells online, via a catalog and in 137 Camping World stores.

Camping World last May paid more than $37 million for Gander Mountain and its Overton’s boating business, winning a bankruptcy auction with multiple bidders. The winning bid included $15.6 million for Gander Mountain’s inventory and $22.15 million for assets that include the e-commerce operations of Gander Mountain and Overton.

In the past nine months, the camping and outdoors retailer also has acquired:

  • TheHouse.com, an online-only retailer specializing in bikes, sailboards, skateboards, wakeboards, snowboards and outdoor gear.
  • Uncle Dan’s Outfitters, an outdoor gear and apparel shop.
  • W82 (formerly Windward Boardshop), a specialty store in Chicago that features snowboards, longboards, skateboards, outerwear, swimwear and accessories.

“The combination of these retailers and their e-commerce platforms provides Camping World Holding with a strong foundation in the outdoor lifestyle market from which to continue building and serving the outdoor enthusiast,” the company said in a press release.

In 2016, Camping World had Internet Retailer-estimated web sales of $93.6 million and an estimated five-year compound annual growth rate of 17.7%, according to Internet Retailer’s Top500Guide.com. In the third quarter ended Sept. 30, Camping World Holdings reported total revenue of $1.24 billion, up 25.1% from $991.1 million  in third quarter 2016. It does not break out e-commerce sales.
