Ben Wanamaker, former director of strategy and business development at Wal-Mart, is now Aetna head of consumer technology and services.

Aetna Inc. has hired a seasoned e-commerce executive from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to oversee a big expansion of its digital healthcare program.

Last week CNBC reported that Aetna has hired Ben Wanamaker, former director of strategy and business development at Wal-Mart, to oversee the health insurer’s new venture with Apple Inc. to deploy more than 50,000 Apple Watches to Aetna’s biggest employer customers.

Aetna has yet to respond to a request from Internet Health Management for more details on Wanamaker’s new role with the company, but Wanamaker’s LinkedIn profile now lists his current position as Aetna head of consumer technology and services. He’s been in the new job at Aetna about two months, according to LinkedIn.

In September 2016, Aetna began collaborating with Apple on an initiative that targets Aetna’s biggest employer customers to distribute Apple Watches to employees that sign up for their company’s health and wellness program. Aetna also says it is working with Apple to develop a series of iOS apps to enable Aetna employers and plan members to track various health and wellness initiatives. Aetna says it will make the new programs available to large employers, SUCH AS? Maybe just list some of Aetna’s clients

Aetna is rolling out a similar program internally. The insurer says nearly 50,000 of its employees enrolled in its company wellness reimbursement program will be offered an Apple Watch for free, enabling them to download and use the new health and wellness apps. Aetna says it will be the first major healthcare company to subsidize a significant portion of the cost of an Apple Watch as part of an employee wellness program. “We are using iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch to create simple, intuitive and personalized technology that will transform the health and wellness experience for our members,” says Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini.

Wanamaker will be extensively involved in the Apple initiative, the CNBC report says. Wanamaker’s LinkedIn profile doesn’t detail his specific job duties at Aetna, however, he brings plenty of digital healthcare and e-commerce experience to his new role with Aetna. At Wal-Mart, where he worked for two years, Wanamaker was in charge of strategy and business development for Wal-Mart’s health and wellness and e-commerce businesses, including partnerships and new ventures, according to LinkedIn. While at Wal-Mart, he was part of the group that developed and launched the Walmart Care Clinic. Wanamaker functioned as general manager with profit and loss responsibility as well as oversight for other corporate functions, according to LinkedIn.

Walmart Care Clinics are independent clinics located in select Wal-Mart stores nationwide that offer a wide range of common healthcare services such as preventative and routine health services for common ailments and screening exams. The clinics are located in Georgia, South Carolina and Texas.
