Online sales in the flowers and gifts industry saw slow growth in 2016 at 4.5% but still slightly outpaced the growth for total category sales, which only was 3.2%. The Top 1000 retailers in this segment hit $4.5 billion in e-commerce business, but online’s share of total sales has hovered right around 20% since 2012. 1-800-Flowers.com Inc.—which, as the second largest category player, hit $882.8 million in web sales last year—recently added the option for customers to order a bouquet through Amazon.com Inc.’s voice-based search program Alexa.
