Centura Health Systems, a large healthcare system serving Colorado and Kansas, is rolling a mobile and digital healthcare program that enables patients to visit a doctor online.

Centura, which has more than 6,000 affiliated physicians and operates 17 hospitals and 14 ambulatory surgery centers, is rolling out a digital doctor visitation program using technology from MDLive Inc., a Sunrise, Fla.-based developer of mobile health apps, technology and a network of physicians and other specialists that link directly to patients for digital healthcare visits.

For $49, Centura Health will connect a patient to a board-certified Centura physician 24 hours a day and year-round for non-emergency medical and pediatric care.

Physicians will be able to assist patients with: allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cold and flu infections, constipation, diarrhea, earaches, fever, headaches, insect bites, joint aches, nausea, pink eye, rashes, respiratory infections, sinus pain, urinary tract infections and other conditions, Centura says. MDLIVE doctors can write a prescription for non-narcotic medications and have the prescription sent to more than 65,000 pharmacies nationwide.

Patients also will be able to get assistance in finding a primary care provider for follow-up care if they don’t already have one. Patients can schedule appointments via CenturaHealth.MDLive.com and see a doctor by secure online video, mobile app or interactive audio, Centura says.

“This program is a giant step forward in healthcare delivery in Colorado and western Kansas,” says Dr. Kit Brekhus, executive physician director, Colorado Health Neighborhoods, a network of more than 3,700 healthcare providers affiliated with Centura Health. “We see virtual health as a tool empowering physicians with the latest advancements in healthcare delivery and significantly improving access to care for consumers and enhancing the ability of our network of physicians to provide care not only for their patients but also for citizens and visitors across the region.”

Digital doctor visits are the latest enhancement to Centura Health’s mobile health program. In May 2015 Centura Health also partnered with IBM to launch an app for heart and vascular care patients that enables them to ask questions about daily health management, find options for cardiac rehabilitation exercises and activities, research heart-healthy recipes and dishes at local restaurants, identify educational resources and videos on living with heart conditions and participate in online communities and support groups.

Based in Englewood, Colo., Centura Health was formed in 1996 as a joint operating agreement between Catholic Health Initiatives and Adventist Health System. It expanded its operations into Kansas in 2011.

In 2015 Centura Health processed 93,194 hospital admissions, recorded 462,738 emergency room visits and performed 80,308 surgeries.
