Consumers will see products their friends want while on the e-retail site.

Amazon.com Inc. says it will “soon” give customers more product information that stems from shoppers’ Facebook connections.

Amazon shoppers already have the ability to voluntarily connect their Amazon accounts to their Facebook accounts, but until now that capability has largely been used by consumers to broadcast their Amazon purchases or products they want to connections on Facebook. Amazon has not, until now, pulled data from Facebook and publicly used that information on Amazon.com.

Amazon says customers with Facebook-connected accounts will see product reviews written by their Facebook connections and products that their connections have put on their Amazon Wish Lists. Wish Lists are a way for Amazon shoppers to collect and save information about products they’d like to have. Wish Lists can be marked private, but Amazon’s default setting for Wish Lists is for them to be public and viewable by anyone.

Amazon says the social information will appear when a customer views a product that a connection has reviewed or put on her Wish List. So, for example, if a connected customer is looking at the Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet, Amazon may show her reviews that her social connections have written and a list of her social connections who have put the tablet on their Wish Lists. Amazon may also use the consumer’s Facebook “Like” information to show her products that she may want to buy. For example, Amazon may show a consumer who on Facebook says she likes Elvis Presley the latest commemorative boxed set of music.

“Whether it helps you pick the right product or find great gift ideas, this feature makes it easier to discover items that may be of interest to you and your friends,” Amazon wrote in an e-mail sent to Amazon customers who already have opted in to connect their Amazon and Facebook accounts.
